The inspiration for this painting was Thomas Jefferson's farm journal that referenced planting activities to the growning cycles of the puccoon. The common bloodroot or "puccoon as it is known to old Virginians, is an early wild flower in the rich woodland here. Often seen with its unfurled leaves pushing up among the crusted patches of unmelted snows.
